Anxiety Relief Techniques – Controlling Anxiety Attacks
There are many anxiety relief techniques you can find online today. But do they actually work?
People who have experienced anxiety attacks know for sure that there is very little one can do to control an anxiety attack. But with some practice and determination you can definitely condition yourself to control the feeling of panic during the attack which could lead to lessening the severity and length of the attack itself.
One of the most effective anxiety relief techniques is deep breathing. This is especially true when you are experiencing an anxiety attack. During an anxiety attack you often feel like you can’t breathe and in severe cases you may feel that there is not enough air getting into the lungs to ensure survival. Focus on taking deep and slow breaths, this will force your mind to the conclusion that you can actually breathe and it’s just your brain playing tricks on you.
Mind games are also great anxiety relief techniques. Concentrate on counting back from a hundred or play the popular animal ABC game (A-ape, B-baboon, C-cow, D-deer…). This will divert your attention from the ongoing anxiety attack and it can effectively shift your focus from any physical symptoms you are experiencing.
Most anxiety attacks are caused by the rush of adrenaline in the body. So other popular anxiety relief techniques consist of actual physical activities such as walking, jogging in place, or other easy cardio exercises like jumping jacks. When there is an excessive amount of adrenaline released in our body, it triggers our “fight or flight” instinct. By doing exercises that requires a significant amount of effort, we use up a good portion of that adrenaline which eventually leads to ending the anxiety attack at a faster pace.
Avoidance is one of the most used anxiety relief techniques implemented today.
Although avoidance may be considered negative, in cases of preventing anxiety attacks, this can actually be healthy. If you suffer from recurring and severe anxiety and panic attacks, it is highly advisable to avoid anything or anyone that extremely stress you out. There definitely are things, situations, and even people who may trigger your anxiety attacks and it would be your best choice to stay away from them if you can help it.
Now if your anxiety attacks are becoming more severe and occurring way too often, it is high time to consult with a medical expert. He or she may prescribe medication that will help in reducing the severity and the occurrence of your anxiety attacks. Therapy is one of the anxiety relief techniques that is usually accompanied by prescription drugs. The combination of both has been proven to provide amazing success in treating anxiety disorders.
It is very possible to take control of your anxiety attacks, but if you feel like it has become more than what you can cope up with, please do see your doctor immediately. These anxiety relief techniques have been proven to be very helpful in controlling anxiety attacks, but don’t think twice when you deem it necessary to seek help from a medical expert.
